Description
The structure of phosphorus is described by its atomic structure and its various allotropes. As a neutral atom, phosphorus has an atomic number of 15, meaning it has 15 protons and 15 electrons arranged in shells (2 in the first, 8 in the second, and 5 in the third). Elementally, phosphorus exists in different forms called allotropes, such as white phosphorus, which consists of P₄ tetrahedral molecules, and black phosphorus, which has a layered structure resembling buckled rings.
